What is the price of a family portrait?
Or.... What is the value of a family portrait?
I am always asked the first question but rarely the second.
Some years ago I visited a relative who was living in a retirement home.
On the wall of the small living room was a beautiful black and white portrait of her children. It was probably made fifty years ago.
I could see the care the photographer had taken with the posing of her 5 children, all in their Sunday best, and with the lighting in her living room, which brought the viewers eye from one fresh face to the next with the features of her living room soft and subtle in the background.
I know by the photographers signature that she paid a premium price for it those many years ago. In today's dollars that sum would be laughable. But what has been the value of that portrait to her over the years? And what is its’ value to her today?
It was one off the few possessions she brought with her when she sold the home in which had raised her family
Classic portraiture is timeless and priceless
One of the things I like about being a portrait photographer is that I know the value of what I create today will increase with time.
